Fishing Report for July ’17

July has been a great month for fishing around the Spooner/Hayward area. Lots of lakes have had a real good deep weed bite for walleyes, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pike, crappies, and bluegills. Jigging with live bait gives us the best chance at a multiple species catch, but throwing wacky worms has been hot all month for largemouths. The average size LMB is running about 12 to 15 inches, but enough are bigger, up to 20 inches, to keep it interesting.

Muskies have not been the most cooperative of fish for us. We’ve boated some decent fish, but honestly we’ve had some longer than expected stretches of inactivity. I’m expecting a great fall bite this year.

Good luck and good fishing,
Jim Stroede
